NFPA 13, Smart Buildings, and the Future of Fire Suppression: Celebrating Home National Fire Sprinkler Week

By: Emergent Team

This National Home Fire Sprinkler Week, we’re celebrating one of the most proven tools in fire protection: the automatic fire sprinkler system. As we spotlight the life-saving power of sprinklers, it’s also the perfect time to look at the role of NFPA 13—the gold standard for sprinkler system design—and how data and connected technology are shaping the future of fire suppression.

What is NFPA 13?

NFPA 13 is the Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, developed by the National Fire Protection Association. It establishes minimum requirements for the design and layout of automatic fire sprinkler systems to ensure reliability and effectiveness.

From residential complexes to high-risk industrial sites, NFPA 13 has played a critical role in saving lives, reducing property loss, and keeping firefighters safer by controlling or extinguishing fires before crews even arrive on the scene.

NFPA 13 in the Age of Data

As the fire service looks toward modernization, NFPA 13 isn’t just about installation—it’s about integration. Sprinkler systems that trigger smart notifications, work with building sensors, and communicate with emergency platforms like Emergent can drastically improve outcomes.

Imagine a world where an activated sprinkler immediately alerts dispatch, notifies crews en route, and provides a real-time building layout and system status—that’s the future we’re building toward.

Sprinklers reduce the risk of death by approximately 89% in homes with systems, according to the NFPA. But their effectiveness increases exponentially when they’re part of an integrated, data-informed response strategy.

Turning NFPA Standards Into Actionable Intelligence

At Emergent, we don’t just acknowledge NFPA standards—we build them into the core of our platform. Our solution is designed to integrate with relevant insights pertaining to NFPA standards, ensuring that fire departments, municipalities, and commercial buildings have access to data that supports compliance, prevention, and faster response.

Derived from pre-plan information, including data collected through Emergent’s Inspections module, real-time flow of information helps crews make decisions en route, enhances situational awareness upon arrival, and supports after-action review through complete incident documentation.

As NFPA continues to evolve its standards to address connectivity, data sharing, and response efficiency, Emergent is there, bridging the gap between prevention systems like fire sprinklers and the operational tools that help responders protect lives and property.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
